Utopia Dystopia Prework
UTOPIA
My Definition: a world or society in which everything runs smoothly and without conflict; everyone is satisfied.
Dictionary Definition: "an imagined place or state of things in which everything is perfect."
DYSTOPIA
My Definition: a world or society - usually post-apocalyptic - in which there is much conflict or dysfunction among individuals, groups, and/or the government.
Dictionary Definition: "an imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice, typically one that is totalitarian or post-apocalyptic."
EXAMPLES
The Truman Show displays a seemingly perfect society, a utopia, with cheery people and bright colors. However, it is soon revealed that it is actually a dystopia because everyone in the town is just an actor in a television show revolving around one unsuspecting man. Once he becomes suspicious, people are less friendly, and the world seems more dark and mysterious.
Blade Runner depicts a world where there is evil technology posing a threat to society - a dystopia. There is hardly any color, and everything is dark. Furthermore, the preview showed a lot of violence and conflict.
Lord of the Flies is a dystopia; however, at the beginning, some characters believed it to be a utopia because they had complete control over their lives for the first time. This didn't last long, as conflict and power struggles arose, showing a very dysfunctional and dystopian society. The preview also showed dark stormy weather and some fighting and violence among the characters.
